Sick (Sigh)

My cold was kind enough to stay away all weekend, only to bring out the stuffy, sniffly big guns this morning.  So, even though I had plans to share the details of that incredible anniversary cake we had last night, I can’t bring myself to get excited at the thought of anything but hot tea.

Instead, curled up on the couch with a box of tissues on this rainy Monday afternoon, I bring you the following confessions (insights?) from my Bangkok life.

1)  Fish sauce has completely won me over.  I can eat it on everything from rice to eggs to chicken.

2) I love the rain in Bangkok. It makes me feel blissful the way I felt on a warm sunny day in early March back home.

3) At least once month I buy a pineapple just for aesthetics.  I let it sit on our kitchen counter, looking pretty, until it’s way past the point of being edible.

4) I’ve worn this Lucy skirt for at least part of the day every day for the past week.  It’s cute and built for tropical climates – made of the same material as yoga pants.  I wish they made it in 6 other colors.  I’d never wear anything else.  (Now if only this weren’t out of stock…)

5) Three guitars and a ukulele traveled with us to Bangkok.  There has been guitar music in this apartment once in six months.

6) Late in the afternoon when I should be writing or laundry-ing or studying Thai or doing something moderately productive, I instead find myself deep into the archives of this or this with a little of this thrown in for good measure.

7) A couple weeks ago I discovered that my kitchen’s shelf of ingredients for baking had been overtaken by terrible little flour bugs.  (I blame the fancy imported bread flour.)  Until the memory of cleaning, discarding, and sanitizing half the kitchen fades, I’m only allowing enough baking ingredients back in the house that can be safely stored in the fridge’s crisper drawer.

8 ) We pay 2,000 Baht a month for cable television that we watch once a week.  We keep telling ourselves that we “might” need to watch the news.

9) I have at least 20 pairs of socks too many.  It’s too hot here for anything but flip flops, and you don’t need socks for yoga.  They just stare up from my sock drawer, looking sad and neglected.

10) Most nights I’d be content to go to bed at 8pm.  I blame the heat.

Fortunately, tonight I won’t need an excuse.  It will be a miracle if I make it that long.  See you tomorrow (hopefully, with cake)!
